How to track WhatsApp clicks as Google Ads conversions
To track WhatsApp clicks as Google Ads conversions, fire a conversion every time someone taps a link to wa.me or api.whatsapp.com on your website. The simplest way is a Google Tag Manager trigger on those link clicks, connected to a Google Ads conversion action set to count once per click. It takes about 30 minutes.
In Malaysia, many enquiries start with a WhatsApp tap, not a form. If Google Ads cannot see those taps, its automated bidding has nothing to learn from, and your reports show far fewer leads than you actually get.
What do you need before you start?
- Admin access to your Google Ads account.
- Google Tag Manager installed on every page of your website.
- WhatsApp buttons that link to
https://wa.me/601XXXXXXXXorhttps://api.whatsapp.com/send?phone=.... Most WhatsApp buttons and plugins use one of these.
Step 1: Create the conversion action in Google Ads
- In Google Ads, go to Goals, then Conversions, then Summary, and create a new conversion action for your website.
- Choose a category that fits, such as Contact, and set it up manually with code.
- Name it clearly, for example WhatsApp click.
- Set Count to One. One person tapping WhatsApp three times is still one lead.
- Give it a value if you know roughly what an enquiry is worth. Otherwise leave it without a value for now.
- Save, then choose to install the tag with Google Tag Manager. Copy the Conversion ID and Conversion label.
Step 2: Create the trigger in Google Tag Manager
- In Tag Manager, open Variables and make sure the built-in Click URL variable is enabled.
- Create a new trigger of type Click – Just Links.
- Set it to fire on Some Link Clicks where Click URL matches RegEx:
wa.me|api.whatsapp.com|whatsapp.com/send - Name it Click – WhatsApp.
Step 3: Create the Google Ads conversion tag
- Create a new tag of type Google Ads Conversion Tracking.
- Paste the Conversion ID and Conversion label from step 1.
- Attach the Click – WhatsApp trigger.
- Make sure the container also has a Conversion Linker tag firing on all pages. Without it, conversions are harder to attribute to the right click.
Step 4: Test before you publish
- Click Preview in Tag Manager and open your website.
- Tap a WhatsApp button. In the preview panel, the conversion tag should show as fired once.
- Test every WhatsApp button: header, floating button, footer and in-page links. Each one should fire the tag.
- Publish the container. In Google Ads, the conversion action status usually changes from “Unverified” within a day.
Should I track WhatsApp through GA4 instead?
You can, and it is useful for reporting. Send a GA4 event such as whatsapp_click, mark it as a key event, then import it into Google Ads. The rule is: use one source as the primary conversion in Google Ads, not both. If the Google Ads tag and the imported GA4 event are both primary, every tap is counted twice and your cost per lead looks half of what it really is.
Is a WhatsApp click the same as a lead?
No. A tap opens WhatsApp. Some people close it without sending a message. So treat tracked taps as an early signal, and check them against reality every month:
| Number | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| WhatsApp taps from ads | Google Ads conversions |
| New WhatsApp chats received | Your WhatsApp Business inbox, counted by you or your team |
| Chats that became customers | Your sales records |
If taps are much higher than real chats, look for accidental taps from a floating button, or a page where WhatsApp is the only way out. If you want Google to optimise for paying customers rather than taps, the next step is importing closed sales back into Google Ads as offline conversions.
What else should be tracked alongside WhatsApp?
- Calls from ads, using call assets with call reporting.
- Calls from your website, by tracking taps on
tel:links. - Form submissions, ideally on a thank-you page or a confirmed submit event, not on button clicks.
Together, these give Google Ads a full picture of enquiries, which is what its bidding needs to work. This is the first thing I set up in every account. If you want it done for you, start with a free audit.
